Martijn Arets expedition leader Crowd Expedition

Martijn Arets

Martijn Arets
initiator and expedition leader
Martijn quit his job in 2010 to pursue his dream. He traveled through Europe in a Volkswagen T2 van for a period of five months to interview the leaders behind twenty authentic European brands. His adventures were compiled in the book Brand Expedition, which he then used to initiate various initiatives aimed at bringing together large groups of people in order to create added value. Via Twitter he arranged a free cargo plane, through crowdfunding he successfully financed the translation and production of his book, and with the help of a social media campaign he defeated the likes of John de Mol to become Best Entrepreneur of 2011.

His curiosity about the possibilities of what he calls the Collaborative Economy led to a new project: Crowd Expedition. In this expedition Martijn, driven by passion and curiosity, will take on the role of expedition leader, accompanied by a broad and varied team. Each team member will contribute their own strengths and their own expertise, allowing everyone to add value to the Expedition. In order to jointly create something unforgettable.

Dave Dielissen
coordination and communication
As core expedition member, Dave brings a well-stocked backpack. With a master’s degree in communication science (VU University Amsterdam), he has an excellent foundation in the field of marketing and communication. But what counts is experience: after graduating, he spent two-and-a-half years working as a junior marketeer for the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). This, together with many relevant additional activities, not the least of which is his contribution to Brand Expedition, has allowed him to work on many projects and campaigns, as well as develop relevant content. These skills and knowledge will now be committed to Crowd Expedition, whereby he will play two roles.

On the one hand he is responsible for coordinating Crowd Expedition. After all, managing the expedition requires a lot of coordinating; arranging interviews, liaising, and organizing the (digital) itinerary – to name but a few things. In addition, we will gradually be extending upon the expedition team with new members and partners. All their activities and contributions will have to be carefully coordinated. All in all, agendas will have to be managed, schedules made, tasks divided and deadlines met. On the other hand, it is his job to raise awareness for the collaborative economy through Crowd Expedition. We want to create a dynamic expedition report which will be continually supplemented with stories, lessons and findings on the collaborative economy and which will be available via all conceivable types of (online) media.

”For me, joining Crowd Expedition is more than just an internship. It is a completely new and, more importantly, unique experience and a great challenge. I’m convinced that it will not only be a great learning experience when it comes to making videos, but that I will also learn a lot from and about all the disciplines involved in this project. I’m very curious as to where this all will lead. I will be engaged with the video support of this project and, together with the team, will create fun and interesting items on Crowd Expedition.”

“To be part of Crowd Expedition is a great honor to me. This project is off the beaten track and is therefore a big challenge for everyone involved. To me, Crowd Expedition is a way of doing research into a new way of using media and a new way of achieving interaction with these users. As a media student it is awesome to be part of such an innovative project, after being educated all those outdated theory at school.”

“To finish my study on a first-rate mode, I searched for an inspiring and educational graduation company. I found it! Like a crown on my study leisure management, I will work with a very professional team. From februari on until june of this year, I will develop a customer journey model for Crowd Expedition. In this periode  I will explore in which way the Expedition can create an optimal value for those who join the expedition. The period at Crowd Expedition will learn me how to produce an unforgettable experience in a creative and new way. My personal expedition will be a great experience that I will take with me for the rest of my career. I hope I will meet you all during this fantastic expedition. Come join it! It’s going to be a wonderful trip!”

“Martijn Arets’ Crowd Expedition is a two-year journey into the new economy of cooperation. It will generate a lot of information and ideas. Mind maps are a perfect tool for providing a clear overview of vast amounts of information. This will become a great collaboration which will generate a series of crowd maps.”

“Having followed the classical MBA-program, in which every enterprise had to follow a strict path, have a clear hierarchy and in which there was little encouragement for ‘thinking out of the box’ it is wonderful to see that not only is there more out there, but that this ‘more’ is gaining momentum. It is just fantastic to see how Martijn Arets has his finger on the pulse of these changes and that his actions and initiatives represent the core sentiment behind the new economy: we do not greedily hog the reasons for our success; we share them. And there is room for everyone to do things their own way.”
